What Causes Acne?
- Clogged pores - Normal sloughing of the skin cells is reduced in acne-prone skin. These cells can accumulate, clogging pores.
- Oil Production - Oil glands producing large amounts of oil acne are more prone to blockage.
- Bacteria - While acne is not an infection like strep throat, larger numbers of bacteria on acne-prone skin can cause irritation, leading to more acne.
Other factors contributing to acne flare-ups are stress and hormones. By themselves, they don't cause acne - but they do influence oil production and the overall health of your skin. While the causes of acne are the same, everybody's skin reacts differently. That's why some people have consistent breakouts, while others have monthly flare-ups. And that's why some people have only a few whiteheads, others get pimples and pustules, and still others suffer from cystic acne.
